ABSTRACT An Analysis of Translation of Non-Standard Expressions in Ms Wiz Jadi Supermodel. Undergraduate Thesis. English Department, Faculty of Letters and Fine Arts. Sebelas Maret University, Surakarta. The purposes of this research are to find out the types of non-standard expressions found in Ms Wiz Supermodel, to find out strategies used in the translation, to analyze the influence of cultural differences to the translation and to analyze the accuracy of the translation of non-standard expressions in Ms Wiz Jadi Supermodel. This research belongs to descriptive study and employs qualitative method. To collect the data, purposive sampling technique was applied. There were primary data and secondary data as the data of the research. The primary data consist of 90 data taken from the bilingual storybook Ms Wiz Supermodel. The secondary data were taken by distributing questionnaires to three raters. Criterion based sampling technique was applied to choose the raters. The result of the data analysis shows that the types of non-standard expressions found in Ms Wiz Supermodel are slang (41 data or 45.6 %), colloquial expression (21 data or 23.3 %), idiolect (26 data or (28.9 %) and deviant spelling (2 data or 2.2 %). Related to the strategy, there are nine strategies used by the translator. They are slang translated into slang (9 data or 10 %), using standard expression (33 data or 36.7 %), adaptation (21 data or 23.4 %), domestication (6 data or 6. 7 %), translation by loan word or loan word plus explanation (12 data or 13.3 %), translation by paraphrase using a related word (3 data or 3.3 %), translation by a more / less expressive word (2 data or 2.2 %), translation by omission (2 data or 2.2 %), and standard expression and explanation (2 data or 2.2 %). Dealing with the influence of cultural differences to the translation, the strategies of domestication, translation by loan word or loan word plus explanation and adaptation were used by the translator to make the same style and to help the target readers understand the translation easily. Related to the accuracy of the translation of non-standard expressions, translations that belong to scale 1 or very accurate data covered 68 data or 75.6 %, translations that belong to scale 2 or accurate data covered 19 data or 21.1 %, translations that belong to scale 3 or not so accurate data covered 3 data or 3.3 %, and there was no translation that belongs to scale 4 or inaccurate data. From the scores given by the raters, it can be concluded that the average of scores is 1. 37. It means that the translation of non-standard expressions in Ms Wiz Jadi Supermodel is close to very accurate translation. It is recommended that other researchers explore non-standard expressions with deeper study. This research is expected to be able to be used as an additional knowledge and references for other researchers, lectures and students of English Department, especially students of translation study.
