An Analysis of Translation Techniques and Translation Quality of Economic Terms in Uniform Customs & Practices for Documentary Credit No. 600 Revision 2007

Abstrak

The research focuses on the analysis of translation technique and quality of economic terms in Uniform Customs & Practices for Documentary Credit no. 600 Revision 2007.
 The objectives of the research are to find out the translation techniques used in translating economic terms and the quality of the translation in terms of accuracy and acceptability.
The research was conducted using a descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected using purposive sampling technique. The methods of data collection were content analysis and interview. From the content analysis, there are 60 data that were found. In interview, questionnaires were distributed to three raters to gather the information of translation quality.
The result of the data analysis shows that there are 6 translation techniques that are used to translate the economic terms. They are borrowing (29 data), amplification (1 datum), established equivalent (27 data), literal translation (2 data), and calque (1 datum). Dealing with the accuracy of the translation, the result shows that: 1) category A (accurate) covers 59 data (98,33%); and 2) category B (less-accurate) covers 1 datum (1,67 %). In acceptability aspect, the result shows that: 1) category A (acceptable) covers 28 data (46,67%); 2) category B (less-acceptable) covers 10 data (16,67%); 3) category C (unacceptable) covers 22 data (36,67%). Therefore, it can be concluded that the translation of economic terms are mostly accurate and less-acceptable.
In translating the economic terms, the translator should produce more qualified translation in order to reduce the misunderstanding. The translator should have a good understanding in economic knowledge from both source and target language.
