Redefining Female Body in Street Dance As Represented in Step Up 2: The Streets

Abstrak

This thesis is written based on the analysis of STEP UP 2: The Streets. It aims to explain how street dance in the film depicts the redefinition of female body in street dance which is constructed by Andie’s character through her active body, her independent and self determinant character.
This research is descriptive qualitative research which the main data are  the characters, acts, sounds, camera angles, lighting, costume, dialogue, and other cinematographic elements of the film. The supporting data are taken from secondary sources such as journals, books, reviews, websites, and other related references.
Since the research belongs to American Study as an interdisciplinary study, it involves some disciplines  employed in the form of theory and approach, including semiotic film theory, and socio-cultural approach.
The research finds that STEP UP 2: The Streets shows the sensuality attraction which is done by Andie   to gain spectator’s interest which is important for her acknowledgment. Film STEP UP 2: The Streets contains redefinition of female body which is shown off by the female street dancer and Andie as the depiction of active female body in America. The research also finds that Andie symbolizes that woman nowadays need space and self-determination to gain society’s acknowledgment so they can achieve their goal.
