The Contribution Of Cartoon Film To Promote Speaking Skill Viewed From Students’ Self-Confidence (An Experimental Study at the Eighth Grade of SMP N 1 Gubug in the Academic Year of 2015/2016)

This research aims to investigate whether: (1) cartoon film media is more effective than picture series in teaching speaking to the eighth grade students of SMP N 1 Gubug in academic year of 2015/2016; (2) students having high self- confidence have better speaking skill than those having low self confidence; and (3) there is an interaction between teaching media and students’ self-confidence to teach speaking.
The teaching media which employed in this research was an experimental study. The population of the research was the eighth grade students of SMP N 1
Gubug in the academic year of 2015/2016. The two samples were taken by using cluster random sampling. The sampling in this research was two classes; one class (VIII A) consisting 34 students as the experimental class and one class (VIII C) consisting 34 students as the control class. The research instruments consist of self -
confidence questionnaire and speaking test which are designed by the researcher. In collecting the data, the researcher made some steps: (1) conducting self-confidence questionnaire to know the students’ level of self-confidence; (2) applying teaching media to the eight meetings; (3) giving post-test to the students, and (4) analyzing the students speaking skill. The data were obtained from self-confidence and speaking test. They were analyzed in the terms of their frequency distribution, normality of  the  sample  distribution, and  the  data  homogeneity and  then  used
ANOVA test (multifactor Analysis and  Variance) and TUKEY test to  test the research hypotheses.
The result of data analysis, it was discovered that: (1) cartoon film is more effective than picture series for teaching speaking to the eighth grade students of SMP N 1 Gubug in the academic year of 2015/2016; (2) the students who have high self-confidence have better speaking skill than those who have low self-confidence; (3) there is an interaction between teaching media and the students’ self-confidence to teach speaking.
Based on the result of the research, it can be concluded that the use of cartoon film is more effective than picture series to teach speaking for the eighth grade students at SMP N 1 Gubug in the academic year of 2015/2016. Therefore, it is recommended that: (1) teachers apply cartoon film media to teach speaking; (2) teachers use  more  innovative  teaching materials to  improve  students’  speaking skill; and (3) future researchers can use this research as a reference for future research
