A Correlational Study Between Students’ Conscientiousness, Vocabulary Mastery, And Translation Ability Of Eighth Grade Of Smp Negeri 1 Baturetno In The Academic Year 2017/2018

ABSTRACK

This is a correlational method. Correlational research is a kind of quantitative research. The population was class VIII of SMP Negeri 1 Baturetno in academic year 2017/2018. The sample was 28 students taken by random sampling. The instruments in collecting the data were questionnaire and test. The questionnaire was used to know students’ conscientiousness, while the tests were used to collect data of vocabulary mastery and translation ability.

The result of this research show that (1) there is a positive correlation between students’ conscientiousness and translation ability (rx1y= 0.355); (2) there is a positive correlation between vocabulary mastery and translation ability (rx2y= 0.880); (3) there is a positive correlation between students’ conscientiousness, vocabulary mastery, and translation ability (R= 0.880). Based on the results of the study, it is known that the first hypothesis saying that there is a positive correlation between students’ conscientiousness and translation ability is accepted. The second hypothesis saying that there is a positive correlation between vocabulary mastery and translation ability is also accepted. The third hypothesis saying that there is a positive correlation between students’ conscientiousness, vocabulary mastery, and translation ability of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Baturetno in the academic year of 207/2018 is also accepted.

The result of this research shows that conscientiousness and vocabulary have some contribution and are important for the students’ translation ability. Both students’ conscientiousness and vocabulary mastery have significant contribution in translation ability.
