This research is a research and development which is aimed to: (1) find out the weaknesses of the existing module; (2) design a contextual learning-based module of Speaking 1 for the third semester of PGSD based on the need analysis; and (3) investigate the feasibility of the developed module for teaching speaking in English Enrichment Program of UMP.
The method applied in this research was research and development design that was conducted at the third semester students of PGSD of Muhammadiyah University of Purwokerto. The research was conducted through two stages: exploration stage and product development stage. The exploration stage resulted: (1) the description of the existing module for teaching speaking, (2) the weaknesses of the module, (3) the need analysis of the new module, and (4) the description of the prototype. Meanwhile, the product development stage included: (1) the tryout of the prototype, and (3) the final product.
Through some techniques of collecting data in exploration stage, the information of the weaknesses of the existing module was collected. This evaluation was based on Cunningsworth model (1995). It revealed that the existing book had some weaknesses and need a revision and development. Considering the need and the facts of the students? need of a module that really helps them to speak, it was finally created a module using contextual learning approach to make speaking meaningful for students.
The product development included developing the module itself and the implementation of the prototype in teaching speaking. The prototype was designed based on the students? need in exploration stage. After being validated by experts, the module was implemented. The tryout was conducted for three times. The module was then evaluated by students, collaborator, and the researcher. Each discussion resulted a revision for developing the module. The questionnaire was also distributed as the students? response toward the new-developed module. It showed a positive response. Based on those findings, it could be concluded that the product was feasible to be used for teaching Speaking 1.
