An analysis of translation quality of positive politeness in terms of accuracy and acceptability on the story entitled summer term at ST. Clare

This research aims to analyze the positive politeness translation and its quality in terms of accuracy and acceptability from the novel entitled Summer Term at St. Clare by Enid Blyton.  This research is descriptive qualitative research. The source data of this research are the story entitled Summer Term at St. Clare and three informants. The data of this research are all the positive politeness employed by the character of the story and information about translation quality which are gathered from the raters. Methods of data collection applied in this research consists of content analysis, interview, and questionnaire. The sampling technique used in this research is purposive sampling. The result of this research shows that there are 15 positive politeness strategy employed by the characters in the story. They are; (1) Notice attend to the hearer 3 data/7.5% (2) Exaggerate 2 data/5% (3) Intensify interest to the hearer 3 data/7.5% (4) Use in-group identity marker 3 data/7.5% (5) Seek agreement 3 data/7.5% (6) Avoid disagreement 2 data/5% (7) Presuppose/rise/assert common ground 3 data/7.5% (8) Joke 1 data/2.5% (9) Assert or presuppose speaker’s knowledge and concern for the hearer’s wants and willingness to fit one’s own wants with them 1 data/2.5% (10) Offer and promise 3 data/7.5% (11) Be optimistic 3 data/7.5% (12) Include both speaker and the hearer in the activity 5 data/12.5% (13) Give or ask for reason 3 data/7.5% (14) Assume or assert reciprocity 3 data/7.5% (15) Give gift to the hearer 2 data/5% The translation techniques used in this translation are; compensation, componential analysis, cultural equivalent, expansion, literal, modulation, reduction, synonymy, transposition, and couplets. The translation techniques applied in translating the positive politeness in the story entitled Summer Term at St. Clare produce accurate and acceptable translation.
