Gender and social status differences in using taboo words in Fast and Furious 1 & Fast and Furious 7 (Sociolinguistics Approach)

This research aims at finding types of taboo words employed by the male- female characters in the film Fast and Furious 1 & Fast and Furious 7, and explaining how social class can affect the use of taboo words.

This research is descriptive qualitative. The sources of the data are the films entitled Fast and Furious 1 & Fast and Furious 7 with the scripts. All of the utterances containing taboo words employed by the characters in the film entitled Fast and Furious 1 & Fast and Furious 7 are used as the data of the research. This research  applies purposive sampling technique. There are 102 data containing taboo words found in 72 dialogues.

In conducting the research, the researcher gains three findings. The first finding shows that there are four types of taboo words used by the characters, both male and female, in the film entitled Fast and Furious 1 & Fast and Furious 7. The types are Epithets, Profanity, Vulgarity, and Obscenity, with the dominant taboo word uttered by the characters is obscenity type. The second finding is the differences between male and female characters in uttering taboo words. Male characters tend to utter taboo words more frequently rather than female characters. Hence, obscenity type of taboo word becomes the most often used by the male and female characters. Furthermore, the third finding in the influence of social class towards taboo words shows that there are only two social classesof the characters who utter taboo words in conversation, namely middle class and working class. Middle class is the dominant social class who utters taboo words in conversation.

This research is expected to give benefits for other researchers, especially those who are interested in Sociolinguistics approach. They can take the same topic in different aspect such as the use of taboo words towards ages
