An analysis of translation technique and translation quality of hyphenated compound words found in the novel entitled crazy rich asians chapter 1 – 10 by Kevin Kwan

This research focuses on the analysis of the translation of hyphenated compound words found in the novel entitled Crazy rich asians chapter 1 – 10 into Bahasa Indonesia. The objectives of this research are (1) to find out the translation technique applied by the translator in translating the hyphenated compound words. (2) to find out the translation quality in terms of accuracy and acceptability. (3) to find out the impact of the applied translation technique towards the translation quality. This research is descriptive qualitative. The sampling technique used in this research is purposive sampling technique. 

The data are hyphenated compound words found in the novel entitled Crazy Rich Asians chapter 1 – 10. The other data are taken from questionnaire assessed by three raters. Total number of data are 145 data. The analysis of translation technique shows that there are 14 translation technique proposed by Molina &Albir applied by the translator. They are: (1)Established equivalent, 53.79%; (2)Borrowing, 0.68%; (3)Variation, 0.68%; (4)Adaptation, 0.68%; (5)Established equivalent + Borrowing, 22.06%; (6)Established equivalent + Generalization, 0.68%; (7)Established equivalent + Linguistic compression, 2.06%; (8)Established equivalent + Linguistic amplification, 2.06%; (9)Established equivalent + Transposition, 1.37%; (10)Established equivalent + Reduction, 2.06%; (11)Established equivalent + Amplification, 3.45%; (12)Established equivalent + Modulation, 1.37%; (13)Established equivalent + Description, 1.37%; (14)Established equivalent + Adaptation, 0.68%; (15)Borrowing + Linguistic compression, 0.68%; (16) Borrowing + Compensation, 0.68%; (17)Established equivalent + Particularization, 0.68%’ (18)Literal + Borrowing, 0.68%; (19)Established equivalent + Linguistic compression + Borrowing, 0.68%; (20)Established equivalent + Amplification + Borrowing, 2.06%; (21)Borrowing + Amplification + Adaptation, 0.68%; (22)Borrowing + Particularization + Reduction, 0.68%.

The analysis on accuracy shows that 141 (97.25%) data are classified as accurate, 4 (2,75%) data are classified as less accurate and no data (0%) is classified as inaccurate. The analysis of acceptability shows that 139 (95.87%) data are classified as acceptable, 5 (3.45%) data are classified as less acceptable and 1 (0.68%) datum is classified as unacceptable. The application of established equivalent gives good impact to the translation quality in terms of accuracy and acceptability. The translation of hyphenated compound words using established equivalent technique are more relevant and familiar for the reader.
