Vina Aniza Dewi. K2212075. Improving Students’ Participation in English Class  Using  Time  Token  Model  (A  Classroom  Action  Research  at  the Eleventh Grade Students of SMA N 3 Boyolali in the Academic Year of
2016/2017).  A Thesis,  Surakarta:  Teacher Training and  Education  Faculty of

Sebelas Maret University. December, 2016.

This research aims at: (1) improving the students’ participation in English class through Time Token Model; (2) identifying the problems which may occur when implementing Time Token Cooperative Learning Model.
The method used in this research is classroom action research which was carried out to the eleventh grade of Science 2 students of SMA Negeri 3 Boyolali in the academic year 2016/2017. The research consists of two cycles, three meetings in cycle 1 and three meetings in cycle 2. Each cycle consists of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The data were collected through observation, questionnaire, tests, interview, and diaries. The qualitative data were analyzed using constant comparative techniques. While the quantitative data were analyzed by comparing the students’ mean score of pre-test and post-test.
The research findings show that the implementation of Time Token Model improves the students’ participation in English class. The improvements includes: (1) more students followed the norms, (2) more students were able to convey their ideas bravely, (3) students were more focused on the task and classroom activity, (4) students were more active and brave to elaborate questions and answers voluntarily, (5) most students looked confident when speaking English in front of the class, and (6) students enjoyed working in group and gave contribution to the discussion.
During the research, it is found several advantages of Time Token Model; (1) improving students’ participation and achievements, (2) eliminate dominance in the classroom or group discussion, (3) allowed passive students to answer questions or perform in front of the class. However, the weaknesses of Time Token Model also appeared. Due to the limited time of the research, the Model did not optimally improve students’ spontaneity in speaking English.
