This research was conducted to analyze the translation of figurative language contained in sentences in a novel entitled The Fault in Our Stars. The research objectives of this research are 1) to find out types of figurative language in a novel entitled The Fault in Our Stars, 2) to figure out the translation techniques of figurative language in a novel entitled The Fault in Our Stars, and 3) to assess the translation quality of figurative language in a novel entitled The Fault in Our Stars.
The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method. The data consist of sentences accommodating figurative language in English as source text and its translation in Indonesian language as target text. The data were collected with content analysis and focus group discussion.
The research findings reveal three points. First, there are 96 data of figurative language found which are 10 (10.4%) as asyndeton; 6 (6.2%) as polysyndeton; 1 (1.0%) as euphemism; 3 (3.1%) as litotes; 5 (5.2%) as paradox; 15 (15.6%) as hyperbole; 1 (1.0%) as oxymoron; 17 (17.7%) as simile; 7 (7.3%) as metaphor; 14 (14.5%) as personification;
3 (3.1%) as allusion; 5 (5.2%) as metonymy; 9 (9.3%) as irony. Second, there are 13
techniques found in this study. The most dominant technique used is established equivalent which amounts to 68.5%, followed by variation (10.1%), amplification (9.2%), reduction (4.4%), modulation (3.2%), borrowing (3.00%), compensation (0.35%), discursive creation (0.35%), adaptation (0.18%), generalization (0.18%), transposition (0.18%), literal translation (0.18%), and particularization (0.18%). Third, the translation quality in terms of accuracy, acceptability, and readability show the score in each aspect; the score of accuracy is 2.98, the score of acceptability is 2.99, and the score of readability is 2.90. The final score of the translation quality is 2.97, therefore, it is categorized as high-quality translation.
