This research was conducted to analyze types of flouting maxim employed by
the characters in a movie entitled “Game of Thrones season 1”. It was also
conducted to find out the characters’ intensions of flouting maxims in the
conversations inside “Game of thrones season 1” movies.
This research is based on a Pragmatics approach, focusing on flouting maxims as
the data. This research is a descriptive qualitative research. It employs purposive
sampling technique. The data of this research were dialogues containing flouting
maxims that were uttered by the characters in the movie. They were classified
based on Grice’s Theory of Flouting Maxims.
The researcher found that firstly, there are six kinds of flouting maxims uttered
by the characters in the movie, they are flouting maxim of Quantity, flouting
maxim of Quality, flouting maxim of Relevance, overlaps of maxims of Quality
and Quantity, Quantity and Relevance, Quality and Relevance.
Secondly, the researcher found that there are some characters intentions of
flouting maxim in the conversations inside the movie. The character intentions
flout the maxim of quantity are to hide the information, to refuse, to satire, to
forbid something, to show agreement, to show disagreement, to show
uncertainly, to convince, and to give information. The character intentions flout
the maxim of quality is to show uncertainly. The character intentions flout the
maxim of relevance are to shift the topic, to show anger, to show disagreement,
to show uncertainly, to convince, and to give information. The character
intentions flout the maxim of quality and quantity is to convince.
