A correlational study between habit in watching English movies with subtitles, vocabulary mastery, and listening comprehension of the eleventh grade students of SMA Batik 1 Surakarta in the academic year of 2018/2019

ABSTRAK

The objectives of this research are to find out the correlation between (1) habit in watching English movies with subtitles and listening comprehension; (2) vocabulary mastery and listening comprehension; and (3) habit in watching English movies with subtitles and vocabulary mastery simultaneously, and listening comprehension.
This research used quantitative approach and correlational study design. The population was all the 200 students of SMA Batik 1 Surakarta in the academic year of 2018/2019 from five classes of the eleventh grade. The sample was 36 students taken by cluster random sampling technique. The instruments in collecting the data were questionnaire -used to collect the data of habit in watching English movies with subtitles- and objective tests - used to collect the data of vocabulary mastery and listening comprehension. The techniques used to analyze the data were Single Correlation and Multiple Regression Correlation.
The results of the data analysis show that in the level of significance of ? = 0.05 (1) there is a positive and significant correlation between habit in watching English movies with subtitles and listening comprehension (r_(x_1 y)=0.524 > rt=0.329); (2) there is a positive and significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and listening comprehension (r_(x_2 y)=0.578 > rt=0.329); and (3) there is a positive and significant correlation between habit in watching English movies with subtitles, vocabulary mastery, and listening comprehension (R_(x_1.2 y)=0.694 and F_0=15.34 > F_t=4.17).
The results of this study reveal both habit in watching English movies with subtitles and vocabulary mastery give 48.2?fective contribution to listening comprehension. Therefore, it should be considered in increasing students' listening comprehension, although these factors are not the only variables which determine listening comprehension, by creating innovation in utilizing any interesting activity which increases students habit in watching English movies with subtitle and enables students to acquire vocabulary mastery more.
