This research was conducted to investigate types and functions of swearing words employed by main character in Deadpool 2 movie. This research used qualitative paradigm and implemented descriptive approach.
In data sellecting the data, this research used purposive sampling technique inteded to achieve its specific goals. The source of the data is obtained from the dialogue transcripted from of the movie, focusing only on the main character’s utterances containing swearing words. There are 24 dialogues and 96 data containing swearing words.
In conducting the research, the researcher gained two findings. The first finding shows that there are four types of swearing words used by the main character in Deadpool 2movie. The types are Epithets, Profanity, Vulgarity, and Obscenity. The majority of the kind of swearing word employed by Wade Wilson as the main character of the movie is Obscenity. Meanwhile, the second finding is the function of swearing words. There are four functions of swearing words. The functions are Expletive, Abusive, Humorous, and Auxillary swearing. The majority of swearing words employed by Deadpool is Auxillary. By observing the relation between types and function of swearing words produced by the main character in the film, the researcher was able to define the main character’s personality which is actually a nice person – it’s worth-calling him as a hero– although he produces higher number of swearing words than usual superhero. It can be seen that the background of his high swearing words production is due to the impact of the society and culture he lives in with additional traumatic background he got from his childhood.
