Translation Analysis Of Address Terms In The Novel Entitled Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief

The purposes of this study are to identify the type of address terms in the novel titled Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief, to identify translation techniques used by translator to translate the address terms in the novel titled Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief, and to describe translation quality of address terms in the novel titled Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief.

This study uses the descriptive qualitative method. The data of this study consist of words and phrases accommodating address terms in English as Source Text (ST) and the translations in Indonesian as Target Text (TT). The data were collected through content analysis and focus group discussion. The collected data were then analyzed based on data analysis model which is proposed by Spradley.

The findings reveal that there are 15 types of address term found in the novel. Generic first name is the most dominant type of address terms found in the novel. The use of generic first name shows that the relation between the addresser and the addressee are rather close. The second most dominant type of address term found is mockery name. The result also shows that the translator used single technique and combination of 2 techniques to translate the address term found in the novel. Based on the result, the translator mostly uses established equivalent to translate type of address terms in the novel, such as title, generic first name, mockery name, etc. The translator also uses pure borrowing often to translate first name, diminutive name, last name, etc. The finding also reveals that accuracy of the translation of the address terms is quite high. The use of established equivalent and pure borrowing technique contributes to high level of accuracy of the address terms in the novel The acceptability of the translation of the address terms is also high, it is because the translator translates the address terms that fit the culture and linguistic norm of the target language. The high level of acceptability in this research is a result of the application of several techniques such as established equivalent technique, pure borrowing, modulation, etc.
