An Analysis of Illocutionary Act in The Teacher’s Utterances of Pondok Pesantren Ta’mirul Islam Surakarta

The aims of this research are (1) to find out types of illocutionary acts found in the teacher’s utterance and (2) to find out the extent of the intelligibility of each types of illocutinary act.
The research is a descriptive research, conducted in October 2014 at the first grade of Pondok Pesantren Ta’mirul Islam Surakarta in the academic year 2014/ 2015. The research data were collected through participant observation where the researcher joined the activity in the field of observation. With this type of observation, the researcher got complete and accurate data. Moreover the researcher got the meaning of every act of the subject of  observation.
The findings of the study points out that (1) the types of illocutionary act that are found in the teacher’s utterances are representatives (26.6%), directives (36.7%), commisives (20%), expressives (16.7%), and declaration (0%), (2) the linguistic forms that are found in the teacher’s utterance are declarative (16.7%), interrogative (50%), imperative (33.3%), and ellipsis (0%).  
This analysis could be very useful for teachers and other researchers. The result of this research provides information about how teacher conveys meaning to the students in classroom interaction, what types of illocutionary act that are used, and what types of linguistic forms used in the teacher’s utterances. Therefore, teachers can use appropriate words when conducting lesson in the class. In the future, the other researchers can do further research on the same field.
