Thesis: English Department, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Sebelas Maret University, Surakarta. This research analyzes genre and register of nine texts in the brochure entitled “Solo & Surrounding” published by Surakarta Culture and Tourism Office. The objectives of this research are to find out genre and register covering field, mode, and tenor used in the texts.
This research is qualitative research employing descriptive method. The source data of this research are nine texts describing tourist attractions in Surakarta in the brochure entitled “Solo & Surrounding” published by Surakarta Culture and Tourism Office. Then, the data of this research are all clauses in the nine texts exploring lexicogrammar, cohesion, text structure, and the generic structure potential. The data found then, are used to interpret the genre and register of the nine texts in the brochure.
The register analysis covers three elements namely, field, tenor, and mode. The interpretation of field shows that the nine texts have the same purpose to describe or inform about tourist attractions in Surakarta to the readers. The interpretation of tenor results that the status between the writer and the readers on the nine texts are equal, the language used by the writer to describe the tourist attractions is familiar, and then the writer gives positive judgment to the tourist attractions described meaning that the writer wants to attract the readers to visit the tourist attractions described. Meanwhile, the interpretation of mode finds that texts 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, and 8 apply spoken style, while texts 3, 7, and 9 apply tend to be spoken style. These findings support the effectiveness of the medium that needs register that is easy to understand and does not need complex idea.
The genre analysis shows that all of the nine texts employ Descriptive Genre. The writer of the texts tends to give information without demanding any argument from the readers. It is supported by the employment of Relational Process.
