An Analysis of Directive Speech Acts Used By Characters in Movie “Green Book (2018)” (A Pragmatics Study)

Abstrak

This research was conducted to determine the types of directive speech acts applied by the characters the movie “Green Book” and to explore the politeness strategies used by the characters in delivering the directive speech acts. This research belongs to descriptive qualitative. The analyzed data are from all the dialogues in the movie “Green Book” containing directive speech acts. The researcher found 100 data in the movie “Green Book”. Those were analyzed using the theory of classification of directive speech act by Tsui (1994) and the theory of politeness strategy by Brown and Levinson (1987). The researcher  finds two  findings in this research. First, there were four types of directive  speech  act  applied  by  characters  in  the  movie  involving  instruction (66%), threat (8%), warning (9%), and advice (17%). The most dominating type of directive speech act in this study is instruction. The characters used four types of politeness strategies namely bald on record, off record, positive politeness, and negative politeness in delivering instruction and threat. Furthermore, in delivering warning, the characters employed three types of politeness strategies namely bald on record, positive politeness, off record. However, the characters also employed three types of politeness strategies in delivering advice namely bald on record, positive politeness, and negative politeness. The most dominating strategy was positive   politeness   strategy   because   the   movie   was   narrated   about   the development of friend relationships between superordinate and subordinate.
