Improving Students’ Speaking Skill Using Storytelling ( A Classroom Action Research at the Tenth Grade of SMAN 2 Karanganyar in the Academic Year 2018/2019 )

The objectives of the research are: (1) whether storytelling can improve students’ speaking skill of SMAN X in learning English, (2) to find out what happens in the class when storytelling is employed in teaching speaking skill in SMAN X, (3) to find out the strengths and weaknesses of implementing storytelling in improving students’ speaking skill in SMAN X. This research was conducted on the tenth grade of SMAN X in Central Java in the second semester of 2018/2019 academic year. The number of students was 35 students. The research was a Classroom Action Research (CAR) the stages of which were planning, implementing, observing, reflecting, and revising. The data were collected through interview, observation, tests, field notes, and documentation. There were 2 cycles on the research. Based on the result of post test 1, it was revealed that there only 60% or 21 students who managed to reach the passing grade, and based on post test 2 there were 82.8% of 35 students, or 29 students reached the passing grade. From those two results, there were 22.8% improvements of the students who could reach the passing grade. The level of students' activeness increases. In conclusion storytelling technique can improve speaking skill of the tenth grade students of SMAN X in academic year of 2018/2019.
