Teacher’ Beliefs About The Use of ICT in The EFL Classroom and Its Implementation in The Teaching Practice During Covid-19 (A Case Study in a High School in Surakarta)

Abstract: The competence in using Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has become a basic need, including in education. Moreover, the emergence of coronavirus disease-19 or COVID-19 forces teachers to conduct the class online. Accordingly, teachers’ beliefs play a huge role about how the implement of ICT in their class. Therefore the objectives of this study are to: (1) explore the teachers’ belief about the use of ICT in EFL classroom at one of Senior High School in Surakarta during COVID-19, (2) explore how teachers’ beliefs are implemented in classroom practices during COVID-19. The techniques of collecting data used in this case study are interview, document, observation, and questionnaire. The data collection was conducted in three meetings which: two meetings of class observation, questionnaire and interview. The sources of data are: (1) an Englih teacher as a participant who was purposively selected because she was considered as the informant who could give sufficient information, (2) events which are teaching – learning activities, and (3) documents which are teacher’s lesson plan. The techniques used to analyze the data are data reduction, data display, and conclusion. The research findings show that; (1) teacher’s  beliefs the use of ICT in EFL classroom; (a) can improve efficiency and effectiveness in learning, (b) is a solution during  pandemic,  (c)  challenging to  be implemented because she was met with; 1) long and difficult process of preparing materials, 2) students’ lack of participations and facilitations, and
(2)    how her beliefs are implemented in classroom practices during COVID-19 lead her to use ICT such as Microsoft 365 and Whatsapp to conduct her class. In conclusion, despite many benefits of ICT, there are still challenges that need to be faced by the teacher. Therefore, it is expected that this study can be used to acknowledge the challenge and overcome it.
