Non-Observed Maxims in TV Series Entitled Pretty Little Liars: Season 7

This research aims at finding types of non-observed maxims in the TV series Pretty Little Liars: Season 7, knowing how context situation affects the use, the hidden meaning, and the function of the non-observed maxims in the TV series. This research is descriptive qualitative research under the framework of a Pragmatics study. The findings reveal three types of non-observed maxims employed by the characters in the TV series: flouting maxims, violating maxims, and opting-out maxims. The most frequent category is flouting the maxim of quality. There are nine strategies used by main characters to flout, violate, and opt-out maxims: giving too much information, giving too little information, using a rhetorical question, using metaphor, using irony, using hyperbole, using sarcasm, giving obscure expression, and giving irrelevant contribution. It is found that there are 11 functions of non-observed maxims employed by the characters in the TV series. Those are giving information, requesting, mocking, threatening, expressing feeling, refusing, convincing, showing humour, avoiding the topic, and avoiding explaining the truth.
