The Translation Analysis of Strategies and Qualities of Onomatopoeic Verb in Novel Room By Emma Donoghue

The purposes of this research are (1) to find out the translation strategies used by the translator to translate onomatopoeic verbs in ROOM novel, (2) to describe the impact of translation strategies in influencing accuracy in the ROOM novel, (3) to explain the effect of translation strategies in affecting the naturalness of the translation.
This research is a descriptive qualitative research. The researcher uses purposive sampling technique in this research. The source of data was taken from documents consisting ROOM novel and its translation, and the informants assessing the quality of translation in terms of accuracy and acceptability. The data of this research are onomatopoeic verb in ROOM novel and their Indonesian translation and information collected through questionnaires given to three raters. The total data in the novel are 62 data.
The results of data analysis show that: (1) Translation strategies found in this research are translation using onomatopoeic word with similar meaning and form (9 data/14.5%), translation using non-onomatopoeic word with similar meaning and form (40 data/ 64.5%), translation using non-onomatopoeic word with similar meaning but dissimilar form (3 data/ 5%), translation using a word with different meaning but similar form (8 data/ 13%), translation by a more general word (superordinate) (2 data/ 3%). (2) Those translation strategies impact on the accuracy in this research which result shows that 35 data (56%) are considered as accurate translation, 14 data (23%) are considered as less accurate translation and 13 data (21%) are considered as inaccurate translation, and the average accuracy value is 2.3 which is concluded that the translation is less accurate translation. (3) Those translation strategies effect on the naturalness which result shows that 38 data (61%) are considered acceptable translation, 14 data (23%) are considered less acceptable translation, 10 data (16%) are considered unacceptable translation, and the average acceptance value is 2.45 which is concluded that the translation is less acceptable.
Translation using non-onomatopoeic word with similar meaning is the most frequently used strategy and this strategy is given a positive impact on the quality of translation in terms of accuracy and acceptability. On the other hand, the application of translation using a word with different meaning in translating onomatopoeic verbs tends to produce in low quality translation.
