The objective of this research is to describe the representation of Kaspar Almayer and how it reflects colonialism. This study applies postcolonial approach since it has something to do with the colonized and its colonizer. This research is conducted using Paul Ricoeur’s harmeneutics that consists of distantiation and appropriation as the methodology. The result is that, first, there are five Almayer’s characters: (1) materialistic person, (2) weak and powerless European, (3) devalued by everyone, (4) a fool and incompetent person, (5) demean the Malay people. Second, as the consequences of colonial mind’s influence, those Almayer’s characters reflects colonialism. The reflection of colonialism can be vividly seen from the way Almayer treats the Malay people. As a white man, he put himself as a civilized over the savage Malays.
