The myth of america as a nation with special destiny and mission as reflected in the bush doctrine

ABSTRACT 2008. This research is conducted to find out the reflection of the myth of America as a special nation with a special destiny and mission in the Bush doctrine by interpreting word by word, sentence by sentence and statements in the textual speech of this document which implied the myth of America as a special nation. The research question is about what are representing the myth of America as a special nation with a special destiny and mission in the bush doctrine and how the Bush doctrine reflected the myth of America as a special nation. The source of data used in this research is textual form of the speech of the United States President, George Walker Bush, on September 17, 2002 in the White House concerning about the United States’ National Security Strategy taken from Encarta, Encyclopedia 2006, Microsoft Corporation. The main data of this research are in the form of words, sentences, expressions, and statements. The supporting data of this research is in the form of articles, books and internet sources that are related to the problem statements. This research is analytic qualitative and it uses the purposive sampling as the data collecting technique. Cultural Hegemony theory, sociological approach, and historical approach are used to answer the problem statements. After conducting the analysis, the researcher came to conclusion that the myth of America is a special nation with a special destiny and mission is reflected in the Bush doctrine. The belief and value of America is a “City on a Hill” and American democracy is the only valid social/governmental structure that is represent the myth of America as a special nation is assumed in the Bush doctrine. It can be assumed from words by words, sentence by sentences and statements in the Bush doctrine. This document is also assumed that there is a potential hegemonic implication in the document as cultural hegemony theory applies as well.
