An analysis of the translation of english idioms in Ms Wiz Spells Trouble by Terence Blacker Into MsWiz Berarti Masalah by Rosi L Siamora

ABSTRACT 2008. This study is carried out to know the translation strategies used by the translator in translating the idioms in Terence Blacker’s Ms Wiz spells Trouble. It is also intended to know the accuracy and the acceptability of the translation of the idioms. This research belongs to descriptive qualitative one. The sources of the data are the book entitled Ms Wiz Spells Trouble by Janine Amos and its translation Ms Wiz Berarti Masalah by Rosi L Siamora. Questionnaires are distributed to raters. Samples are obtained by using total sampling technique since the samples are all data which are found in the sources of data. The results of the analysis show that there are four strategies proposed by Mona Baker which are used by the translator in translating the idioms namely translation using an idiom of similar meaning and form, translation using an idiom of similar meaning but dissimilar form, translation by paraphrase, and translation by omission. The most dominant strategy used by the translator is translation by paraphrase. Meanwhile, the analysis of accuracy and acceptability shows that the level of accuracy of the translation of the idioms is high since only few of them were scored as less accurate and inaccurate by raters. The data having the highest rank of accuracy are dominated by idioms which are translated by using the strategy of translation by paraphrase. 1Mahasiswa Jurusan S1 Non Reguler Sastra Inggris dengan NIM C 1303029 2Dosen Pembimbing The level of acceptability of the translation of the idioms is high as none of them is classified into unacceptable translation. Most dominant data that are considered into acceptable translation are idioms which are translated by using the strategy of translation by paraphrase. And the level of readability of the translation of the idioms is also high since none of the idioms confuses the respondents. The most dominant strategy used to translate the English idioms to make them sound natural and easily understood by target readers is the strategy of translation by paraphrase.
