ABSTRACT 2008. A Study on Translation Technique and Quality Assessment of the Translation of The Very Best of Donald Duck Comics into Indonesian. Undergraduate Thesis, Surakarta. English Department, Faculty of Letters and Fine Arts. Sebelas Maret University, May 2008. This study is a descriptive-qualitative study with an embedded-case study research design. The purposes of the study are (1) to describe technique decided to translate comics entitled The Very Best of Donald Duck Comics into Indonesian, 2) to describe the effect of techniques on the accuracy in content and acceptability of translated text of The Very Best of Donald Duck Comics, 3) to find out the target readers’ response on readability of translated text of The Very Best of Donald Duck Comics. The data of the research are English comics entitled The Very Best of Donald Duck Comics and their translation in Indonesian, selected using purposive sampling technique. Two methods of data collection were employed: content analysis used to obtain data from both source and target texts, and questionnaire used to gather data about the accuracy in content, acceptability, and readability. The accuracy in content and acceptability of the translated text were rated by three raters while its readability was rated by three target readers. The results of data analysis show that: (1) there are nine techniques used to translate The Very Best of Donald Duck Comics into Indonesian namely Adaptation, Borrowing, Calques, Established Equivalent, Linguistic Compression, Literal Translation, Reduction, Transposition and Variation, (2) the chosen techniques contribute positively to the accuracy in content and acceptability is 1.07. This average score means that the source text has been accurately rendered into the target language; the target text is easy to understand as determined by the raters and it needs not restructured, (3) the target readers’ response on the translated text is also positive. The average score for readability is 1.31. It can be said that The Very Best of Donald Duck Comics is easy for the target readers to understand. As the average score for those three aspects is 1.19, it can be concluded that the translation of the comics book The Very Best of Donald Duck Comics is of high quality.
