Translation shift analysis on Kehidupan Rahasia Ms. Wiz

ABSTRACT
2008. This research focuses on the analysis of the types of translation shift and the accuracy and the acceptability of translation shift in the children storybook entitled Kehidupan Rahasia Ms Wiz written by Terence Blacker.
This thesis was conducted in order to describe the types of translation shift and to know the quality of translation shift in terms of the accuracy and the acceptability.
The research belongs to descriptive qualitative. To collect the data, purposive sampling technique was applied. The research was conducted by using content analysis and questionnaire. The source data is a storybook entitled Kehidupan Rahasia Ms Wiz written by Terence Blacker. There are 78 data found in the storybook. The data consist of the English text and its Indonesian version translated by Ramayanti. While, the secondary data were taken from the questionnaire collected from three raters.
The result of this analysis shows that there are three types of translation shift in Kehidupan Rahasia Ms Wiz storybook. The three types of translation shift are structural shift (5 data : 6,41%), class shift (is similar to category shift) (8 data : 10,26%), and unit shift (is similar to level shift; is similar to rank shift) (65 : 83,33%). At most, the translation shift found in Kehidupan Rahasia Ms Wiz storybook is unit shift (is similar to level shift; is similar to rank shift). It is because there is a different system between the source language and the target language, especially the grammatical construction.
Dealing with the quality of the translation, the translation shift in the children storybook Kehidupan Rahasia Ms Wiz is accurate and acceptable since the mean score of the accuracy is 1.03 and the mean score of the acceptability is 1.04. For the accuracy of the translation, 77 data (98,72%) are accurately translated, 1 datum (1,28%) is less accurately translated, and there is no datum inaccurately translated into the target language. The raters also assessed that 77 data (98,72%) are acceptably translated, 1 datum (1,28%) is less acceptably translated and there is no datum unacceptably translated into the target language.
