ABSTRACT
2008. The research was conducted to describe the politeness strategies employed by characters in the film entitled Pirates of the Caribbean: the Curse of the Black Pearl for issuing commands, the reasons why the characters employ the commands, and the responses given by the addressee.
The research employed the socio-pragmatics approach with commands as the scope of the analysis. This research was a descriptive qualitative research. It employed purposive sampling technique. All the dialogs containing commands were taken as the data. There were 26 data representing the criteria. The data were analyzed with Brown and Levinson’s Theory of Politeness by considering Holmes’ social dimensions and Hymes’ SPEAKING formula.
From the analysis, the researcher finds the following results:
First, there are four politeness strategies employed by the characters in the film. They are bald-on-record, positive politeness, negative politeness and off record.
Second, there are various factors influencing the characters to employ each strategy. They are the situation when the conversation happens, the degree of imposition that may damage the hearer’s face, the relationship between the speaker and the hearer, the social status of the speaker and the hearer, and the domain of the conversation.
Third, the hearers in the film give two general responses to the commands employed by the speakers. They are compliance and refusal. Most of the hearers comply with the commands employed by the speakers. Therefore, most of the commands delivered by the speakers are successful.
From the results, it is expected that the research will give an input to the readers in studying commands dealing with politeness. It is suggested that other researchers analyze the employment of commands with different approaches.
