A Correlation Study between Students’ Language Awareness, Vocabulary Mastery, and Reading Skill at The Tenth Grade of High School in Indonesia in The Academic Year of 2021/2022

The aim of this study is to find out the correlation between: (1) language awareness and reading skill; (2) vocabulary mastery and reading skill; (3) vocabulary mastery and language awareness towards reading skill.
This study used correlational research, which is a kind of quantitative research. The population of the study is the tenth-grade students of a high school in Indonesia in the academic year of 2021/2022. The samples are 31 tenth grade students that were chosen by cluster random sampling. The instruments which were used to collect the data were tests and questionnaires. The tests were used to collect the data on vocabulary mastery and reading skill. Meanwhile, questionnaire was used to collect the data on students’ language awareness. The techniques used to analyze the data were Pearson Product Moment and Multiple Correlations.
The results of this research show that: 1) there is a positive correlation between language awareness and reading skill (rx1y=0.7963 and to (7.090) > tt (1.699)); 2) there is a positive correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading skill (rx2y=0.8510 and to (8.725) > tt (1.699)); and 3) there is a positive correlation between language awareness, vocabulary mastery simultaneously, and reading skill (R=0.8719 and Fo (44.379) >Ft (3.34)). The results of this research show that language awareness and vocabulary mastery contribute to students’ reading skill. Both language awareness and vocabulary mastery need to be considered in improving reading skill. However, reading skill doesn’t completely depend on the two variables.
