ABSTRACT 2008. The research is based on Pragmatics study. The aims of the research are to describe the types of requestives used by the characters of the film entitled “Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement”, to find out how each type of requestives used by the characters in the film, and to describe the situations that influence the use of each type of requestives in the film. This research employs descriptive qualitative method. The data are taken from the dialogs in the film entitled “Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement” that contain requestives used by characters. The sampling technique applied in this research is purposive sampling technique. In classifying the types of requestives, this research uses Tsui’s classification of requestives. Then, the research describes how each character in the film applies requestives, including politeness using Brown and Levinson Theory; directness and indirectness. Finally, the research describes the situations that influence the use of each type of requestives in that film. The result of the research shows that there are five kinds of requestives in the film, namely request for action, request for permission, offer, invitation, and proposal. The types of requestives in the film are delivered directly and indirectly. Most of the requestives in the film are delivered directly by the speakers. Although in requestives indirect is more prevalent but the speakers prefer choose direct expressions to indirect expressions to make the hearer understand easily and will do what the speakers request soon. Requestives are expressed indirectly when the face risk in the conversation is very high. Requestives are expressed politely so it needs politeness strategy to express requestives. They are bald on record strategy, positive politeness, negative politeness, off record strategy. The speakers employ bald on record strategy when there are overwhelmingly good reasons for ignoring face risk and the speakers speak in the most direct way. The speakers apply positive politeness when the speakers may orient positive face which appeals the hearer’s desire to be liked and approved of in conversation. The speakers employ negative politeness when the speakers orient towards a hearer’s negative face which appeal to the hearer’s desire not to be impeded or put upon, to be left free to act as they choose. The speakers apply off record strategy when the speakers express requestives indirectly. The situations also influence the use of requestives. Requestives in formal situation are expressed more polite than in informal situation. However, the speakers also express requestives in greater politeness in informal situation when the speakers respect and want to show their deference to the hearers Hopefully, this research will be useful for future researchers who are interested in studying requestives. They can analyze it from a different point of view and from other data source such as drama and novel.
