An analysis of the translation of idiomatic expresions in Lauren Weisberger’s Bos Paling Kejam Sedunia

ABSTRACT
2008. This research focused on the analysis of strategies and the quality of the translation of the idiomatic expressions in the novel entitled Bos Paling Kejam Sedunia written by Lauren Weisberger.
This thesis is conducted in order to describe the strategies applied by the translator to translate the idioms and to know the quality of the translation in terms of the accuracy and the acceptability.
The research belongs to descriptive qualitative. To collect the data, purposive sampling technique was applied. The research was conducted by using content analysis and questionnaire. The source data is a novel entitled Bos Paling Kejam Sedunia written by Lauren Weisberger. There are 79 data found in the novel. The data consist of the English idioms and its Indonesian version translated by Sisca Yuanita. While, the second data were taken from the questionnaire collected from three raters.
The result of this analysis shows that there are five strategies employed in translating the idiomatic expressions: using an idiom of similar meaning and form (1 data: 1,3 %), using an idiom of similar meaning but dissimilar form (4 data: 5,2 %), translating by paraphrase (66 data: 83,6 %), translation by omission (2 data: 2,5 %), and using loan words (3 data: 3,7 %). At most, the idiomatic expressions in the novel entitled Bos Paling Kejam Sedunia are translated by paraphrase strategy since it is inappropriate to use idiomatic language in the target text because of differences in stylistic preferences of the source and target language
Dealing with the quality of the translation, the translation of the idiomatic expressions in the novel Bos Paling Kejam Sedunia is accurate and acceptable since the mean score of the accuracy is 1,2 and the mean score of the acceptability is 1,2. For the accuracy of the translation, 67 data (84,8 %) are considered accurate by the raters, 9 data (11,4 %) are not so accurate and 3 data (3,8 %) are not translated. Meanwhile, the raters assessed that 71 data (89,9 %) are acceptable, 5 data (6,3 %) are not so acceptable and the rest 3 data (3,8 %) are not translated.
