ABSTRACT 2008. This research was conducted to identify the strategy of requesting employed by characters of the movie Winnie the Pooh “Pooh’s Heffalump movie” and the politeness strategy applied in the request expression in this movie. I classified the strategies of request based on Anna Trosborg’s classification. Further, Geoffrey Leech’s Politeness Principles were used as the framework in analyzing the politeness strategy. To achieve the goal, I applied library research in the form of descriptive qualitative research. This research was focused only on the dialogue that contained request expressions. From the result of the analysis, four strategies are found in this movie. They are: Hint Strategy, Statements of the Questioning the Hearer’s Ability/ Willingness, Speaker’s Needs and Demands, and Imperative. First, Hint strategy is used in one datum, the request strategy of Ability /Willingness is applied by 3 data. Second, request strategy of Needs/Demands is used in one datum. Last, strategy of Imperative is applied by 10 data. It is found that the characters perform the request strategies in various ways. From the politeness strategy, there are two politeness principle strategies found in the request expression: Tact Maxim and Approbation maxim. In delivering the request, the speakers try to obey the maxim but unfortunately they sometimes violate the maxim. From the data obtained, 10 data obey the Tact maxim, 4 data violate the Tact maxim and one data obeys the Approbation maxim.
