This study aimed to explore students' perceptions and preferences on teaching approaches in academic writing classes. The academic writing class has three teaching approaches; a product approach, a process approach, and a genrebased approach. This study focused on the different perceptions and preferences of the students. It elaborated on why students preferred the teaching approaches and gave insights into how students' perceptions and preferences affected the quality of the teaching and learning in the academic writing class. A qualitative case study was employed to conduct this research. Five graduate students from one of the universities in Indonesia participated in this study. The researcher collected the data from interviews and questionnaires. The data were then analyzed using the interactive model proposed by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana, which has four steps: data collection, condensation, data display, and concluding. The results showed that the creativity of the teacher in combining process and genre-based approaches could make students happy with learning activities in the academic writing class because students felt helped in writing because of the learning cycle. In the learning cycle, students were given the opportunity for individual construction by developing their abilities and ideas, but the teacher still provided scaffolding and guidance; thus, students became more focused on writing.
