Using games in teaching and learning vocabulary to the fifth grade of SDN Gambirsari Surakarta

ABSTRACT
2008. This final project is written based on the job training in SDN Gambirsari Surakarta for a month. The writer took the fifth grades as the subject to be observed. The objectives of this final project report are to describe the process of teaching and learning activities in SDN Gambirsari Surakarta and to describe the games applied by the writer in teaching vocabulary to the fifth grade students of SDN Gambirsari Surakarta.
The writer did some activities during the teaching and learning process. The activities consist of warming up, presentation, skill practices and test. On this job training, the writer taught English material focused on the vocabulary using game technique. In presenting the new vocabulary, the writer used Translation method because it is a quick and easy way to present the meaning of words.
Based on the discussion, there are three steps in teaching and learning vocabulary. They are presenting new vocabularies, remembering new vocabulary and assessment. The games itself was held in remembering vocabulary step. The games are word game, matching game, and puzzle game. By applying these games, the students become an active learner, because in playing activity the children become the participants in the learning activity. Moreover, by using games in teaching and learning vocabulary process, the children learn something easily through that activity because the students play with fun, enjoy and enthusiastically.
