The Impact of Financial Inclusion on Bank Profitability: Evidence from Indonesia

Financial institution plays a vital role in contributing the economy growth and promoting the financial inclusion by providing facilities to households. Understanding the influence of financial inclusion on the bank’s profitability is critical, particularly for the development of banking industry in emerging economy. This study attempts to investigate the impact of financial inclusion on bank-level profitability in context of Indonesia. The sample of this study consists of 93 commercial banks in Indonesia which collected from the annual report data over period between 2015 and 2020. The panel data analyzed with fixed effect method is used to test the relationship between financial inclusion and bank performance. The results find positive impact between the financial inclusion and bank profitability of commercial bank in Indonesia in three dimension of financial inclusion namely access, availability, and usage. This work hopes to enrich the existing literature in this particular topic in emerging economy. The result of this study can also assist policymakers such as the central bank of Indonesia in designing better strategies and regulations to achieve higher financial inclusion and boost the economy's development.
