Deviance Portrayal in Lower-Class Society in Oliver Twist

The method of this research uses descriptive qualitative. This research applies sociological approach to analyze social phenomena in Oliver Twist novel. The objectives are to explain the deviant behaviors of the lower-class society, especially the criminal characters, in Oliver Twist novel using Robert K. Merton’s Anomie theory and to describe the reflection the nineteenth century Industrial Revolution in England. The result of the analysis is the criminal’s gang characterization, such as Fagin, Bill Sikes, Nancy, Artful Dodger, Master Bates, and Noah Claypole show their deviant behavior as a cause of the negligence of the Victorian government. Oliver Twist novel reflects child laborers, social inequality, poverty, and criminality during the nineteenth century of Industrial Revolution in England.
