An Analysis on Teachers' and Students' Perceptions Toward Online Learning in English Lessons During the Covid-19 Pandemic

The research is conducted to find out the English teachers’ and eighth-grade students’ perceptions toward online learning in English lessons and how the English teachers implement English online learning during the covid-19 pandemic. The method used in this research is a case study. The population of the research is the English teachers and the eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 3 Gondangrejo in the academic year 2020/2021. There are two English teachers and three classes of the eighth grade with a total of 99 students. The research was conducted in December 2021. The sample of the research was 65 students in the eighth grade and two English teachers selected by quota sampling. A questionnaire, interview, and observation were intended to collect the data. In order to know the teachers’ and students’ perceptions toward online English learning, this research used descriptive statistics and qualitative to reveal the results data from questionnaires, interviews, and class observation.
The findings of the research indicated that both the English teachers and most of the eighth-grade students gave a good perception of English online learning during the Covid-19 pandemic. They were enthusiastic to teach and learn English online, got easiness in finding English materials online, most of the students keep understand the English materials being learned, and also, they hoped they could implement some systems of English online learning in English conventional learning in the future. Whereas, both English teachers and some students also gave perceptions that English online learning has obstacles and problems during the English teaching and learning process that are not supported by learning and environment facilities, teachers and students are easily distracted during the English teaching and learning process and there is lack of interaction between teachers and students. The result of the English class observation showed that the English teachers at SMP Negeri 3 Gondangrejo applies online English learning asynchronously using three online learning applications: WhatsApp Group, Google Classroom, and Indoprima.
 
The teacher applies online English learning using a Scientific Learning approach. The teacher uses a mixture of Indonesian and English during the learning process to make it easier for students to understand the material and avoid misunderstandings.
