REVISITING ENGLISH TEACHERS ROLES IN POST-CERTIFIED PEDAGOGY

This study aims to investigate the effect of teacher certification on the teachers’ performance in fulfilling their roles. In specific terms, this study aims to (1) describe the roles of certified teacher in teaching English in the class and (2) describe how far the contribution of teacher certification in optimizing the role of English teachers in the classroom. This study applies a descriptive qualitative case study as the research design. The primary data were collected by conducting an observation at the English class and interviewing three certified English teachers at a junior high school in Surakarta. The research results show that that the three certified English teachers have fulfilled and maximized their roles as a teacher which are the role of controller, organiser, assessor, prompter, participant, resource, tutor, and observer. Another result indicates that the three qualified and certified teachers mentioned above have performed their roles well and to the fullest extent possible. As a result, it can be concluded that the legal certification of teachers plays a crucial role in enhancing both teacher performance and their role in connection to teaching and learning process. The increasing demand for the role of the teacher is a historical fact. Teachers are constantly being asked to assume more responsibilities. Therefore, teacher certification is raised in which is expected to enhance the performance of the teacher.
