This research is conducted to find out how the characters in the movie “Call Me by Your Name” construct their identity through the panopticism of hegemonic masculinity and heteronormativity. Additionally, this research further examined how both male characters in the movie attempt to sustain and produce hegemonic masculinity and heteronormativity. This research applied Roland Barthes’ Semiotic to examine the mise-en-scenes, figure behaviors, and dialogue among characters through qualitative purposeful sampling. The finding is elaborated more by applying Foucault’s view on disciplinary power through panopticon, R. W. Connell’s hegemonic masculinity, and Judith butler’s on gender performativity to provide a thorough framework for data analysis. This research found that in the movie, Oliver presents himself as a heterosexual man according to the model of hegemonic masculinity in a given society while having a romantic and sexual relationship with Elio, a fellow man. In social aspects, Oliver also presents himself as a domineering man who asserts dominance over the margins group (women, gay men, and fellow younger men) which causes subordination and hierarchization within gender. Apart from conformity toward hegemonic masculinity and heteronormativity, both Oliver and Elio also show actions of rejection toward any gender performance that they perceived as non-heteronormative. Their rejections and disassociations from the margin groups in the public domain show the panoptic nature of hegemonic masculinity and heteronormativity.
