An analysis of techniques and quality of the song lyrics translation in animation movie entitled “happy feet”

ABSTRACT This research focuses on the analysis of translation techniques applied in translating the song lyrics in the animation movie entitled “Happy Feet” and translation quality in term of accuracy, acceptability, and readability. This research is descriptive qualitative study. The purposes of the research are (1) to describe the techniques used by the translator in translating song lyrics subtitle into Indonesian (2) to find out the quality of the translation in terms of accuracy, acceptability and readability. The research employed purposive sampling technique. The source data were all song lyrics in the Happy Feet movie. The other data were obtained from the questionnaire distributed to three raters and three respondents. The total data in the movie were 172 data. The analysis on the translation techniques shows that there are six techniques applied in translating the lyrics in the subtitle. The techniques are addition (16 data), reduction or deletion (55 data), translation shift (18 data), modulation (3 data), literal translation (67 data) and free translation (13 data). The analysis on the translation accuracy shows that there are 105 data (61.05%) considered to be accurate, 50 data (29.07%) considered to be less accurate and 17 data (9.88%) considered to be very inaccurate. The analysis on the translation acceptability shows that there are 142 data (91.62%) considered to be acceptable and 13 data (8.38%) considered to be less acceptable. And the analysis on the translation readability shows that there are 117 data (75.48%) considered to be readable, 34 data (21.94%) considered to be less readable and 4 data (2.58%) considered to be unreadable. The techniques resulting translation with high degree of accuracy is literal translation while the one resulting in inaccurate translation is reduction. The techniques resulting in acceptable translation are addition, translation shift, and modulation while techniques resulting in less acceptable translation are reduction and literal translation. The techniques resulting translation with high degree of readability is translation shift while the technique resulting in unreadable translation is literal translation.
