Self-Directed Learning Using Mobile Devices to Enhance Listening Skills

This study aims to identify the students' reason for doing self-directed learning, listening material that the students learn, and  the contribution of self-directed learning using mobile devices to enhance listening skills.

This research is a qualitative study that uses narrative analysis. The data source in this study is three undergraduate students from English Department at one of the universities in Surakarta, Indonesia. Moreover, the data are collected through open-ended quesionnaire and in-depth interview. Then, the thematic analysis proposed by Barkhuizen, Benson, and Chik (2014) is used to analyze the data.

The results of this study show that self-directed learning using mobile devices can enhance listening skills. Overall, there are some merits when the students regularly doing self-directed learning using mobile devices to enhance listening: (1) Students do self-directed learning using mobile devices to enhance listening skills to increase their academic performance; (2) Self-directed learning using mobile devices to enhance listening skills can be done through website and phone application; (3) Self-directed learning using mobile devices to enhance listening skills assist the student to improve their English language skills.

Thus, the researcher suggests that the student try to do self-directed learning using mobile devices to enhance listening skills since it can be done with flexibility.
