THE PEDAGOGICAL CHALLENGES FACED BY HIGH SCHOOL ENGLISH TEACHERS IN EMERGENCY REMOTE TEACHING

This research aimed to explore: (1) the pedagogical challenges that English teachers face; and (2) how the teachers overcome the challenges in emergency remote teaching. This research was conducted in 2022. This study uses a qualitative narrative inquiry method as the research design, which uses Narrative frameworks and interviews as the data collection techniques. Three English teachers were recruited using purposive sampling as research participants. Then the data were analyzed using thematic analysis.

The results show that (1) teachers experienced challenges related to; a) the teaching orientation related to learning materials; b) the shifting curriculum; c) the evaluation of student's attitudes, participation, and feedback; d) students' low motivation that affects students' understanding of the material; and e) the orientation towards learning strategies. (2) The teacher overcomes the challenges by a) using two learning systems; online learning and offline learning, even in a pandemic situation; b) relating the materials to the student's interests to increase students' motivation; c) practicing student a lot to get better understand the lesson; and d) using attendance list that has an access code to ensure students following the class.
