Speaking in a foreign language is one of the most emotionally demanding skills for learners to develop, and while previous research has largely focused on anxiety, emerging studies highlight the role of positive emotions, particularly Foreign Language Enjoyment (FLE), in shaping learners’ experiences. This study explores FLE among Indonesian EFL university learners using Moodie.ai, an AIpowered speaking platform, by addressing two research questions: 1) what factors facilitate EFL university students FLE in Moodie.ai-facilitated speaking practice, and 2) how does Moodie.ai’s features facilitate students’ FLE in English speaking practice based on the experiences of EFL students. Using a qualitative narrative inquiry design, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with three (3) Indonesian EFL university learners, namely DA, RA, and RJ, and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings revealed that 1) teacher-related requirements served as the primary trigger for learners’ initial engagement with the platform, as all participants used Moodie.ai to fulfill course requirements and minimum grade standards. However, the factors influencing FLE varied across learners: a) peer interaction provided meaningful support for DA, (b) ego-driven social comparison shaped RA’s experience, and (c) the platform’s rigid scoring system repeatedly disrupted enjoyment for the RJ. Regarding Moodie.ai’s features, the findings further revealed that 2) none proved universally effective in facilitating enjoyment: a) the audience observation feature demonstrated the strongest potential for facilitating enjoyment through its fluency dimension, whereas b) the recommendations feature was perceived as the least effective due to its generic and repetitive nature. Overall, the findings suggest that FLE is a highly individualized experience, but ultimately shaped by teacher-, peer-, learner-, task-, and platformrelated factors, underlining the need for more adaptive and more emotionally responsive AI-assisted language learning tools.
