Lilis Setyowati. S132108013. Kajian Terjemahan Kalimat yang Merealisasikan Peristiwa Gossiping Pada Serial Drama Bridgerton (Pendekatan Sosiopragmatik). Supervisor: (1) Prof. Drs. M. R. Nababan, M. Ed., M.A., Ph.D. (2) Prof. Dr. Djatmika, M.A. Thesis. Master Degree of Linguistics Majoring in Translation. Faculty of Culltural Science, Universitas Sebelas Maret, Surakarta. 2023.

This research was undertaken to examine the types of gossip uttered by the characters in the Bridgerton drama series, the types of sentences used when gossiping and its function, translation techniques used in translating sentences that realized as utterances on gossiping events, the impact of applying translation techniques on pragmatic shifts, as well as to assess the translation quality in terms of accuracy, acceptability, and readability.

This research adopted descriptive qualitative research with multiple case studies. Documents and informants were used as data sources. The data consisted of linguistic data and translation data.  The data were gathered using two methods: Document analysis and Focus Group Discussion. Document analysis was used to obtain the linguistic data. Meanwhile, Focus Group Discussion was beneficial in gathering the translation data. This study used a purposive sampling technique.   Furthermore, data analysis was carried out through four stages; domain, taxonomy, componential, and cultural theme analysis. The researcher found 197 sentences of data realized as utterances in gossiping.

According to the findings, there are three different forms of gossip: negative, neutral, and positive. Naturally, the character use statements that are realized as utterances when gossiping. According to this study, the sentences used when gossiping are declarative, interrogative, and imperative. The three different sentence constructions serve various purposes. This study demonstrates a variety of sentence functions, such as stating opinions, facts, defending, hoping, answering, forbidding, ordering, ensuring, asking for opinions, praying, seeking information, and suggesting. The fourth finding in this study is the translation technique used by translators to translate sentences used when gossiping; established equivalent, pure borrowing, implicitation, variation, reduction, generalization, paraphrase, modulation, explicitation, transposition. Several techniques affect the shift in the types of sentences and their functions, such as; interrogative to declarative, stating opinions to accusing. Last, the translation's quality score is 2.89 on average. Pure borrowing, reduction, paraphrase, and modulation are some translation techniques that contribute to the translation's lack of perfection in quality.

This study has repercussions, including modifications in how KBBI perceives gossip.  It is based on findings that gossip not only disparages the target gossip but also gives them admiration. Furthermore, translation techniques by Molina and Albir (2002) allows for a reclassification according to the translator's orientation.
