This research outlines the types of English slang in The Gentlemen, identifies the translation techniques used when translating the slang into Bahasa Indonesia, reveals the slang's shifting caused by the translation techniques, and assesses the translation quality in terms of accuracy and acceptability.
This research's data were analyzed with qualitative descriptive method. The data source consisted of both documents and informants. They were all dialogues from the film, and the informants were three raters. Due to the document and informant selection, a purposive sampling technique was used to determine the data sources. The data were collected by means of content analysis and Focus Group Discussion (FGD).
There are a total of 112 data containing four categories of English slang words: group identification and creativity (6 data), privacy and secrecy (12 data), informality and intimacy (82 data), and vulgarity and offensiveness (12 data). There are six translation techniques: neutralization (73.21%), discursive creation (8.93%), deletion (2.68%), established equivalence (8.04%), literal translation (3.57%), and borrowing (3.57%). Furthermore, the translator shifts 103 (91.96%) slangs into non-slang words from the data. The average accuracy score is 1.91, marked as inaccurate which is caused by the majority of the translations that have been distorted from its meaning, while the average acceptability score is 1.66, marked as unacceptable, caused by the majority of the translations have been shifted into non-slang words in the target language.
