This study aims to analyze the politeness strategy in the Marriage Story movie from the perspective of Brown and Levinson's theory. The research method used is descriptive qualitative that utilizes a model of analysis based on four main stages of examination, including domain, taxonomy, componential, and cultural theme analysis. This approach was supported by the combination of the analytical models proposed by Santosa (2021) and Spradely (1980). The location of this research is "Marriage Story”, a 2019 drama movie directed by Noah Baumbach that tells about a couple who have to go through a series of interpersonal conflicts. Brown and Levinson's politeness theory can be used to analyze the use of politeness strategies in this movie. The results of the study show that there are several politeness strategies used in this movie. Bald-on-record strategy such as using suggesting and requesting, positive politeness strategy such as noticing to hearers, negative politeness strategies such as using hedging and apologizing, and off record strategies such as using irony and ellipsis. The pattern of politeness in this film is also influenced by the development of staging along the movie. The use of politeness strategies in the Marriage Story is very complex and tends to always change at each stage. In the complication stage, the use of politeness strategies tends to increase compared to the orientation stage and decreases during the evaluation and resolution stages. This research contributes to the understanding of the use of politeness strategies in a movie and its implications for social interaction. This research can be a reference to the politeness strategy in the interaction as well as the influence of movie staging on the application of politeness strategy by protagonist and antagonist characters.
