Segregation in 1920 was a hypocritical phenomenon left over from slavery. The impact of this phenomenon was that some black people with white skin decided to pretend to be white to get their privilege. This phenomenon was called ‘passing’, and it inspired Nella Larsen to wrote a novel with the same title, and it was finally adapted into a movie in 2021. The adaptation was faithful to its original novel, and it also use black and white filter, which, making it more interesting to study. This research aims to examine the identity crisis and complexity of the two characters, Irene Redfield and Clare Kendry, in the novel Passing and compare it with the movie adaptation. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method and utilizes socio-historical theory and film semiotics. The results show that the influence of racism in 1920 caused an identity crisis in an individual and made the two characters unable to accept themselves, and caused deep wounds both for themselves and their own race.
