ABSTRACT

This study aims to: 1) describe and explain the meaning syair gulung created by poets of the North Kayong community, West Kalimantan Province; 1) describe and explain the value of the religious character of poem rolls created by poets in North Kayong, West Kalimantan; 1) describe and explain the use of roll poetry as teaching material for writing poetry in grad X of high school.

This research method is a qualitative method with a descriptive form.  While the strategy in this study is a semiotic approach. The source of data in this study is the sheet syair gulung by North Kayong poets as well as interviews and informants. The data collection techniques used were interviews and observations.       

The data analysis model in this study uses the Miles and Huberman flow model of analysis, which is a three-component flow analysis model, namely data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing / verification which is carried out in flow with the data collection process and flows simultaneously.

The results of this study can be concluded that 1) the meaning of roll verses obtained from 4 poets, there are 39 action codes, 6 cultural codes, 11 connotations, and 4 symbolic codes; 2) There are 16 elements of character education values contained in the syair gulung of works West Kalimantan North Kayong poets with dominant character values are religious characters; 3) the meaning and value of religious character in syair gulung can be used as teaching material because it is in accordance with the nature of nature and the next era which leads to the formation of humans with character. The suitability of the material in teaching poetry in high school grade X in Phase E of the Independent Kuriuculum.However, it can also be used as teaching material in phase F in the writing element with the learning achievement of writing Indonesian literary texts.
