This study investigates positive politeness in a talk show. The objective of this study are (1) to find out what types of politeness strategies are used by Graham Norton in "The Graham Norton Show". (2) to find out the implied meanings of the utterances used to express positive politeness strategy. (3) to find out the factor that influence the use of Positive Politeness strategy used by Graham Norton in "The Graham Norton Show" The data sources are the utterances of the host and guests were collected through the observations of the show. The investigation was carried under the framework of politeness by Brown and Levinson (1987).

The study revealed that there were 31 positive politeness strategies, and there were ten types of positive politeness was found in the show.  Those are: notice/attend to the hearer; exaggerate; intensify interest to the hearer; use in-group identity markers; seek agreement; avoid agreement; presuppose/assert/raise common ground; joke; assert or presuppose the speaker’s knowledge; offer/promise; be optimistic; include the speaker and the hearer in the activity; give or ask for reasons; and give gifts to the hearer. This study found that social factors and social dimensions affects positive politeness. In this show, the host dominates use exaggerates strategies. Using positive strategies for politeness in teaching English creates a welcoming and supportive learning environment, which improves engagement, participation, and academic success.
