Idiomatic expressions, being language and culture-specific, present unique challenges for translators, demanding a profound understanding of both the source and target languages. This research aims to classify the types of idioms, identify the translation strategies used to translate the idioms, and assess the quality level of the idiom translations in Purple Hearts Netflix movie in terms of accuracy and acceptability. It focused on how the strategies used by the translator affect the quality of the translation product.

This study used a descriptive-qualitative with a single embedded-case study. It involved four major stages of data analysis technique as proposed by Spradley (1980), namely domain analysis, taxonomy analysis, componential analysis, and cultural theme analysis. Purposive sampling was used to determine its data, which were collected through content analysis and focus group discussion (FGD). The data were idiomatic expressions in the forms of words and phrases contained in dialogues.

The results of this study portray that there are six types of idiomatic expressions. They are phrasal verbs, idioms with a verb as a keyword, idioms with a noun as a keyword, idioms with an adjective as a keyword, prepositional phrases, and idiomatic pairs. In addition, the translation strategies used to render the idiomatic expressions found are translating by paraphrasing, using idioms with similar meaning but dissimilar form, using idioms with similar meaning and form, omissions of play of the idiom, and omissions of an entire idiom. Additionally, this research found 2 data translated using a partial omission strategy, a translation technique which is not incorporated in the referral theory. The quality assessment of the idiom translations shows that the accuracy and acceptability scores are 2.84 and 2.7 out of 3 respectively, meaning that the translations are accurate and acceptable, and the translation strategies employed significantly influence the translation quality. Paraphrase strategy, particularly, is associated with higher scores in transferring the meanings successfully, while omission of a play of the idiom negatively impacts the accuracy and acceptability.
